The Hebrides have a special place in Scottish history, delivering a blend of Gaelic culture and Norse legend set against a backdrop of untamed natural beauty. This archipelago of more than 500 isles off Scotland’s west coast offers spectacular white-sand beaches, purple moorland and rugged mountains, with the space for residents to take a breath, but also to experience the community of island living at a slower pace, says Iona Conn, associate director at Savills Glasgow.
“Along with their superb heritage, there’s an undeniably romantic fascination to the islands of the Inner and Outer Hebrides that’s bringing increasing numbers of international residents,” Conn says. “A large percentage of our buyers are from the UK but I also talk to clients from as far away as Hong Kong, Dubai and the USA. Americans, especially those with a distant family connection to the clans, can feel a strong pull to the Hebrides.”
The history excites buyers – and so, too, does a new crop of stylish contemporary homes springing up in the dramatic landscape. These feature expansive glass windows that allow the natural beauty outside to shine while an often deceptively simple, minimalist design treads lightly on the terrain.
“For a long time, people were happy to invest in a property in need of refurbishment as long as it was on one of the islands’ superb beaches, but that’s changed: now there’s a greater focus on both the location and the property, with a strong preference for well-finished turnkey homes,” says Conn.
