The arches once adorned York Theatre Royal but were moved to their current location when the theatre was remodelled in 1879. According to Pevsner, the new owner WA Waddington remodelled the St Leonard’s Place frontage and the old façade was removed and re-erected in Chelmsford Place, where it formed the boundary in the garden of a Manor House, long since demolished.
