House & Garden’s top interiors trends for 2026

Noni Ware is acting executive editor of House & Garden magazine. Alongside her journalistic career, for the past 14 years she has worked as a stylist on interiors and fashion projects. Ware lived for nine years in Hong Kong, where she was fashion director for Quintessentially Asia, hosting brand events and offering personal shopping services. She moved back to London two years ago. Here, she chooses her favourite interiors trends for 2026. 

Down to earth
We’re moving ever more towards earthy, natural colours – those lovely browns that were once on the walls, but are now on kitchen cabinets and rugs. It all feels very grounded, textured – particularly with the resurgence of sisal rugs, which I’ve always had in my house. You can see it in the new pieces from Nordic Knots and Peter Page – lots of beautiful ochres and greens – or the new Broccoli Brown paint colour from Farrow & Ball. There’s a strong feeling that we’re spending too much time on our screens, so designers are reacting by reconnecting with nature. There’s a sense of wanting to bring a more textured world into our spaces. 

Steering the craft
Craftsmanship is something every interiors magazine talks about – but it’s so important. And a lot of craftspeople are now battling to get their wares into people’s homes. It’s vital to champion brands such as Otzi Ltd, which makes heirloom furniture and accessories. Or initiatives such as Gather Design, where you can access the website and say, “I want a new kitchen table to seat 12”, then it will come up with a list of everyone within a 60-mile radius that might be able to produce that table. It’s genius, because you’re cutting down on all the shipping and delivery costs. We’re moving, I hope, towards keeping it much more local. 

Textile luxe
Across ranges including Colefax and Fowler and Sanderson, fabrics are becoming so much more intricate. We’re not talking about printed linens any more. We’re seeing jacquard, weaving, tapestry, damask: the inspiration is coming from suzanis – tribal textiles made in Afghanistan and Uzbekistan – and little scraps of fabric that designers have found. Many of the new ones I’ve been looking at are embroidered. Part of this return to our rich history of craftsmanship is down to increasing demand from American clients, though interest in these techniques in the UK has never really gone away. While there is a slowing-down of consumer spending on luxury clothes, people are clamouring for experiential travel, and they want their homes to reflect some of the destinations they’re visiting. 

The painting’s on the wall
The trend for exquisite murals and hand-drawn wall decoration will continue to evolve. Of late, London’s renovated Sloane Club has commissioned a classically inspired piece by Rosie McGuinness that spans the length of its Venus dining room. Decorator Paolo Moschino has worked with the artist Dawn Reader to create a hand-painted blue mural in one client’s home, while Lucy Hammond Giles from Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler conceived an ivy-wrapped latticework for a vaulted ceiling, painted by Magdalena Gordon. As experiential travel increases, so too does the desire to transform spaces into, say, Italian gardens – or, as in the home of novelist Andrew O’Hagan, a ceiling inspired by a Tuscan basilica, brought to life by artist Tony Roche.
